Recent rainfall had transformed the track we were walking along on Epsom Downs into a messy array of mud and puddles and each step we took was accompanied by a satisfying squelch. As we strolled towards Langley Vale on that cold winter afternoon, the low sun cast a warm, golden glow on the landscape before us. The setting sun reflected in the puddles and silhouetted the twisted shapes of the trees. Despite the chill and the mud, there was a certain serenity in the stillness of the landscape.
